BROADCAST
THE FUTURE CRAYON

The Future Crayon is a compilation of nearly all of Broadcast’s B-sides and rare tracks from 1999 to 2003, mostly showcasing the spacious, unsettling and rhythmic side of the group. The etheral “Illumination” opens the collection with guitar zizz and a screechy synth, all anchored by a simple bobbing bass line. “Where Youth and Laughter Go” acheives hallucinatory status with a generous helping of reverberating instrumentation and harmonies while “Test Area” sounds like a drummer solo in dripping wet cavern. More than half of these tracks are instrumentals and a handful of the lyrical songs have only a few words to impart, resulting in a dive into the exquisite, sometimes jarring sound environments that the band so distinctively created.
