MUDCRUTCH
MUDCRUTCH

Before the Heartbreakers, there was Mudcrutch, the band which Tom Petty would reassemble over 30 years later to release their official self-titled debut which reexamines their Floridian roots with concentrated southern rock, some bluegrass leanings and country love. A couple songs are borrowed like the traditional jig “Shady Grove” and the Byrds’ cover of  “Lover of the Bayou.” We’re also presented with “This Is a Good Street,” a clever and compact original from Benmont Tench as well as “Bootleg Ryder,” which takes some format cues from the classics “American Girl” and “Here Comes My Girl.” Petty loosens up a bit and the reunited bandmates seem to really enjoy themselves, taking their time strolling down memory lane with a matured and moderate treatment to the music.
