The debut solo album from Tom Petty is a pure, chilled-out rock record that’s soaked in summer rays, tapping into the power of rhythm guitar and journeying through Petty’s influences from the 50’s and 60’s. There are bright and open chords at the outset of the rather double-minded “Free Fallin” and sharp slide guitar on the anthemic harmony-laced “I Won’t Back Down.” The frantic “Runnin’ Down a Dream” contrasts clean acoustic strumming with a fierce, driving riff and the punchy “Yer So Bad” is amusing yet edifying. Full Moon Fever takes its time over the course of nearly 40 minutes with contributions from multiple members of the Heartbreakers and Traveling Wilburys (most notably studio confidante Jeff Lynne who stratified the production and put a polish over each track), and is a beloved release within Tom Petty’s catalog.
