TOM PETTY
HIGHWAY COMPANION

Although released in 2006, Tom Petty’s balmy and modest third solo release was his last unaccompanied effort; It’s a record that doesn’t contain the arena rock he was so capable of through the years but rather laid-back Heartland tunes with modest lyrics, neatly packaged like a travel log in the passenger’s seat. Opening boogie rocker “Saving Grace” touches on finding identity and salvation, followed by the emotionally powerful “Square One” that dwells on clarity and restoration. “Down South” unabashedly borrows from the Dylan songbook and the chorus from the shuffling “Big Weekend” takes percussive cues from “Yer So Bad” off of Full Moon Fever. Highway Companion is coated with a golden luster thanks to Jeff Lynne’s warm production and Petty is clearly careful with his words, delivering breezy, story-driven songs of contemplation, mobility, and the passage of time.
